Moments of Joy: Finding Beauty in Everyday Dementia Care

Moments of Joy: Finding Beauty in Everyday Dementia Care

One of the most powerful things I’ve learned in dementia care is that joy doesn’t come in grand gestures. It comes in small, quiet, sometimes hilariously unexpected moments. In a world where so much can feel heavy—grief, loss, exhaustion—it’s the little bursts of laughter and light that carry us through.

I want to share a story that perfectly captures this.

I work with a woman who is in the moderate stages of dementia. She rarely uses words to communicate anymore, but over the past few months, we’ve built a real connection—a relationship built on routine, rhythm, and trust. At this point, she knows me, and I know her. And we’ve created a ritual for our visits.

We start by walking around her community. Then it’s time for a snack, a little freshening up, and then—depending on her mood—a dance party to her favorite music. After that, we read one of Emma Rose Sparrow’s wonderful color books. We always end by taking another walk around the community, looking for things in the color we just read about.

Simple, right? But it’s magic.

One day, after reading about the color orange, we were on our usual post-book stroll. As we passed a neighbor’s door, I spotted a leaf on a wreath that matched the color perfectly.

Trying to be funny, I said:
“Look! An orange leaf on that wreath. Oh look, I’m a poet and didn’t even know it!”

I laughed at myself—because yes, it was cheesy.

And then, something happened that I’ll never forget.

She looked right at me, clear as day, rolled her eyes, and said:
“That was really bad.”
Then she smiled.

I belly laughed—the kind of laugh that starts in your gut and shakes your whole body. I couldn’t believe it. Her timing was perfect, her expression priceless. It was a moment of wit, humor, connection—and it meant the world to me.

That one exchange reminded me that while dementia changes a person, it doesn’t erase who they are. Their spark is still there. Their sense of humor, their personality, their spirit—it all remains, even if it shows up in new and surprising ways.

It’s easy to get lost in the challenges of care. But if we slow down and stay open, these moments of joy are there, waiting to be noticed. They remind us that silliness matters, that playfulness has purpose, and that laughter really is the best medicine.

So if you’re on this journey, look for those moments. Cherish them. Celebrate them. They’re not just bright spots—they’re lifelines.

And next time you crack a terrible joke, don’t be surprised if someone rolls their eyes and gives you the best comeback of your life.
